robensemble: Dear Facebook, I accept that you are running a business here, and that your site is frequented by users from all different walks of life, with different tastes, opinions and sensitivities. I’m also aware that in many cases, you have a legal position to uphold that must incorporate the laws of a significant number of countries. In that respect, I can understand why you’d remove certain offensive images or posts, because whether they are intended in humour or otherwise, it’s smart business to keep your userbase feeling comfortable with your website, and to keep your website available worldwide. (In fact, I even applaud some the steps you have taken to uphold your users’ right to free speech, despite public outcry towards a certain page that managed to offend a large number of people. It did so without breaking any laws or any of your website’s own rules, and you stood your ground.) As businessmen running a website that’s main purpose for many is staying in touch with family and friends, I can understand why you’d ban some content that other websites might turn a blind eye to. As human beings, I cannot fathom how you allow the existence of so-called “likewhores”, the people that upload images of children dying from cancer, people suffering from disabilities, victims of animal abuse, victims of domestic abuse, babies that clearly won’t see their first birthday, and all to get ‘likes’ on a picture. I’m sure they’re careful to make sure their content does not break any of your community guidelines, but I appeal to your humanity to look into this matter further, and shut these people down before your website degenerates into nothing more than a beacon of extortion. Answer me honestly, people of facebook, are you happy knowing that your paychecks are coming from a company that allows people to exploit the diseased and dying for personal gain? No? Well, you’re in a much better position than I am to change that. Yours in vain hope, Rob Sanderson, just another user.
